i don't think there is one thing on the menu that isn't excellent. the service is great, and the atmosphere is fun. love love love it.
A wonderful place for an inexpensive lunch, Santiago's features some great shrimp and mussel dishes. Definitely try the gingered squash as a side dish.
This restaurant has variety of breakfasts I never experienced. I don't remember the name of the ones we tried but my wife had an omelette and I tried benedictine eggs and it was "sublime". The coffee is delectable too.
Enjoyed it immensely, the food was fine but I could have done without the end of the calamari. If they didn't have enough left for an order, why not tell me instead of cooling all the scraps they had left in the bottom of the bowl. I wouldn't have minded. On the other hand my partner was delighted. I'll be back.
Read about it in the TImes Colonist review so thought I would check it outnext time I was in Victoria!! Well worth checking out!! The food was excellent... and there is a choice of mild, medium or spicy. The blending of spices and flavours was nicely balanced. I had the burrito and my friend had the (Tomo??)salad and we were both happy with our selections....and sufficiently full. They do want you to give them notice of a few hours if you want the Paella.
The service was great with staff making you feel very 'at home' and not hovering yet available (and cheerful!!).
Can't wait for my next visit .... I need to work my way through the menu over a period of time !!
The first time my family visited Santiago's Cafe (early 1996), we had an excellent time. Food, drink, laughter, and crayons. -) What more can you ask to end a day, while on a family vacation? It was brilliant.
Then, our second visit Sept2007. Well, I will pointedly warn you that I've NEVER been treated so callously by any wait-staff from any place with such a reputation, in my fifty years of life. Ignorance or laziness is one thing, malice is another.
If it is the son that has inherited the father's business, I can see that the only reason that he hasn't driven nay, pounded a good business into the ground is because, Santiago's is in tourist territory.
After several (four) tries of getting our order correct. After I went to the staging area to confer with our waiter, so that he'd key down his apparent belligerence toward us. I requested a dtente to preserve my family's dignity and fond memory. A few minutes later, our waiter brings the last part of our order a bowl of salsa for my daughter. Which for some odd reason is a magnitude of order more spicy than the salsa in my wife and I's order. My daughter can't eat it. Arrrgh.
I mean, after I'd pointedly ordered two DIFFERENT salsa orders, one for her and a combo dip order for my wife and I.
Thirty-five minutes after stepping in the door, I had had enough.
I had my wife pay, I was so dearly upset. And, we left. We left about $70 of uneaten food, and barely begun wine on the table.
I obviously can only give this establishment, in its current form, the lowest possible rating. And, lament the tarnishing of our original memory.
And just to be clear on how I perceive that this restaurant has changed its attitude. A couple perhaps in their early sixties who'd come in exactly after us, were asked three times if they wanted drinks. And the drink 'suggestions' weren't subtle. Jeez, I remember college. And, any first term psych student could easily make out they were NON-drinkers. Did he not think of promoting the soda or tea? And to add insult, these folks ordered three of the 'moderately' priced tapas dishes. Come on. Greed isn't necessarily good. Be happy that your clients are just that clients.
And FWIW, a tiny bit of advice. Your clients WILL spend money, if they think it was their idea to so. If THEY perceive unavoidable value.
I truly believe that Santiago's now thinks their clients are stupid stupid dogs, that will jump through any hoops to be entertained.
We go to Santiago's quite often for a quick lunch and are always impressed with the service and delicious food!
otimo restaurante muito bom atentimento e otima comida
come here every year for our anniversary cant wait till next time.mouth is watering thinking about the mussels.
What can I say my family loved this place! We visited Victoria for four days and ate here often! The food was good , simple , fresh , just like a nice home cooked meal . We had the same server each time for dinner , not sure if he was the owner but he should be ! I will eat there again ! Thank you Santiago's and our most casual , friendly waiter .
My wife and I visited Victoria two weeks ago, and really appreciate the food served (Vegeburger is the best ever). The owner was super hospitable as well. Great place to go for paella and cerveche as well!!
Each time we visit Victoria (3-4 times a year), our favourite place to eat is
Santiago's. Great mussel dishes, ceviche, coconut rice, especially like the spaghetti squash dish, and love the mouth-watering banana dessert! The food is always
served hot, the owner and staff are friendly, and the service is fast . I like the
'funky' decor too.
We ate there just once..... so far.... ( we are 3000 miles away). The food was great and the service top notch!
We were only there one night and the food was fantastic, service was very good. Keep up the good work!
We wanted to let you know one of our highlight's visiting Victoria , was to go to your Restaurant . With your advice on what to eat, was one of the best meal's we have ever had ... For sure five star meal !!!!! Can't wait to come back for more.. Judy Beiko , Winnipeg .
Fresh, lively food in a funky atmosphere - great location, view, service and value.
Simply put - if you are in Victoria, eat at this place! I travel extensively and eat at many places. Santiago's food is unique and incredibly tasteful. The staff is friendly and the menu and decor is original. The only disadvantage is they close too early! Do not hesitate to give this very unassuming place a try!
A wonderful place with a generous menu! , no matter when you visit the food is always fresh! go and visit this wonderful funky place. Great Staff! David and the Owner Tim ae wonderful... great welcome at the door.
Hi Santiago's Cafe, We were up in Victoria last week and LOVED your breakfast that you served. So much that we purchased your cook book. When we got home we went to the cook book to make your "Egg's Benny" and you didn't include your recipe for your "Orange Chipotle Haulendaise" sauce. Can you add that to your cook book? We loved your food so much and were very disappointed to find that not listed in your cook book. Thanks,
Had a most excellent breakfast very friendly staff
